PROJECT OVERVIEW

REMAP was a startup based in the United Kingdom that aims to provide mindfulness through visualization, guiding users to envision future scenarios amid mental chatter. As Research Lead for REMAP, I oversaw analyses, usability testing, and mobile app design with a team of five designers, including a Project Manager, two SCRUM Masters, an Interaction Lead, and a Design Lead.

The main issue was that users desire a steadfast dedication to visualization tools within a space that fosters mental clarity.

COMPETITIVE AND COMPARATIVE ANALSYSES

Based on our analysis of apps like Superhuman, Mindlabs, Headspace, and Envision, we've identified key features crucial for success: Community building, Retention, Personalization, Offline Workouts, Expert Tips, Personal Progress, and Save for Later. Mindlabs and Headspace excel in Offline Workouts, Expert Tips, and Personal Progress, while Envision leads in Community Building.

To refine our app, we'll prioritize enhancing Offline Workouts, Expert Tips, and Personal Progress while leveraging Envision's success in Community Building to foster user engagement.

In our Comparative Analysis, we've evaluated features similar to our competitors, tailored to the fitness industry leaders Nike, Gymshark, Peloton, and Lululemon. We've identified four critical features: Save and Favorite, Progress and Stats, Events and Classes, and Explore Page.

To refine our approach, we'll focus on optimizing these features to deliver a superior user experience, drawing inspiration from the best practices of our competitors while incorporating unique elements to differentiate our offering.

KEY EXAMPLES

The favorite and save-for-later feature, showcased in both Headspace and Calm, enables users to personalize their meditation and music experiences. With this feature, users can save their favorite meditations and music tracks for easy access, creating a curated library tailored to their preferences. Whether it's a calming meditation or uplifting music, users can seamlessly revisit their saved content whenever they need to relax and recharge.

Peloton, Envision, and Headspace excel in providing users with accurate progress tracking features, essential for maintaining discipline and focus, particularly for individuals dealing with depression and anxiety. These screenshots demonstrate how users can monitor their exercise and mental fitness progress in detail, empowering them to stay motivated and committed to their well-being journey. Accurate progress tracking serves as a powerful tool for users to recognize their achievements, fostering a sense of accomplishment and contributing to improved mental health outcomes.

Headspace and Peloton offer an extensive selection of workout classes, providing users with flexibility and convenience in choosing their preferred activities. These screenshots showcase the diverse range of classes available, catering to various fitness levels and interests. Additionally, both apps allow users to easily sign up for classes directly through the app, streamlining the booking process and enhancing user experience. This flexibility empowers users to personalize their fitness routines according to their schedules and preferences, contributing to increased engagement and adherence to their fitness goals.

Gymshark's Explore Page offers users the freedom to customize their workout experience according to their preferences. Users can select the type of workouts, choose the number of days per week they want to exercise, specify the equipment they have access to, and set the duration of their workouts. This level of customization empowers users to tailor their fitness routine to fit their individual needs, goals, and schedules. By providing a personalized workout experience, Gymshark fosters user engagement and satisfaction, ultimately contributing to improved fitness outcomes.

USER INTERVIEWS

During the interviews, three recurring themes surfaced:

1

Routine: Participants stressed the significance of consistent self-care practices.

2

Self-care: Prioritizing personal well-being emerged as a central theme.

3

Community: Some participants noted the impact of family support, highlighting the importance of community in self-care.

Brainstorming Ideas

Refining these How Might We (HMW) statements can help sharpen the focus and clarify the objectives. Here's a refined version of each statement:

  1. How might we design an immersive environment that fosters mental rejuvenation and cognitive renewal for users seeking enhanced mental clarity?

  2. How might we develop a user-friendly visualization platform that seamlessly integrates into daily routines, empowering users to cultivate consistency and adherence?

  3. How might we establish a tranquil sanctuary where individuals can effectively alleviate stress and alleviate anxiety through guided visualization techniques?

By refining the statements, we're emphasizing the specific goals and target outcomes, making it easier to generate focused solutions.

Low Fidelity Sketches

This brings us to our sketches, where we integrated the flow from REMAP's current desktop website with the user flow we developed.

Mid Fidelity Wireframes

To initiate design testing, we transitioned our low-fidelity sketches into mid-fidelity wireframes, priming them for a usability test. Ensuring consistency, we incorporated the provided color scheme, integrated the three onboarding questions, and included a categories page.

User Flow

After establishing Jacob as our persona, we devised a straightforward user flow to outline the app's functionality. Users would begin by launching REMAP, logging in, and answering three questions to generate a personalized visualization profile. From there, they could select a suggested visualization and either play the meditation immediately or save it to listen to later.

USER PERSONA

By understanding Jacob's unique needs, motivations, and challenges, we can tailor our app to provide him with valuable resources, support, and tools to manage stress, cultivate resilience, and prioritize his mental well-being effectively.
